Amazon Web Services (AWS) is in the process of developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool aimed at generating code in real-time. Internally dubbed Kiro, this innovative project is designed to utilize AI agents for executing complex coding assignments. Kiro is envisioned as a versatile platform with capabilities for writing code, designing user interfaces, identifying and resolving bugs, and optimizing existing code. It is expected to be more comprehensive than Amazon Q, delivering expanded functionality. The anticipated launch date for Kiro is set for June.

Amazon Is Reportedly Working on Coding Agent Kiro

According to a report from Business Insider, AWS is crafting an AI system equipped with agentic abilities for managing end-to-end coding tasks. The publication cites an internal document indicating that Kiro will be capable of utilizing AI agents to interpret user requests and analyze databases, facilitating code generation in what is described as “near real-time.”

Kiro is expected to be available as both a web application and a desktop application, capable of interfacing with both first-party and third-party AI agents. This positions the tool as an AI agent orchestrator, capable of leveraging a variety of AI technologies beyond those developed by Amazon. Furthermore, the application is anticipated to connect with knowledge bases and extensions, enabling it to access a wide range of information for task completion.

While the report did not clarify the tool’s potential connections to existing code repositories, it suggests that Kiro could learn from existing codebases to adapt its output to match specific coding styles. Additionally, Kiro is said to accept multimodal input, allowing developers to provide prompts using visual diagrams and various contextual information.

The software development tool is set to perform a variety of functions, including crafting technical documents, detecting and rectifying bugs, and optimizing code for particular applications. However, details regarding the programming languages it will support or its ability to convert code between languages were not disclosed in the report.

Further insights from the report reveal that Amazon is exploring the emerging trend of “vibe coding.” This approach allows developers to shift from traditional coding practices to instructing generative AI systems on tasks such as writing, editing, testing, and deploying code. This evolution positions developers more as project overseers who guide the vision from concept to final product.
