On Monday, Amazon and Universal Music Group (UMG) revealed an expansion of their existing partnership, emphasizing a shared commitment to artist-focused principles, including enhanced protection against fraud. The newly broadened agreement not only retains their previous collaborative efforts but also introduces enhanced product innovation and exclusive content rights related to UMG artists. A significant focal area of this partnership will be the establishment of policies aimed at addressing the challenges posed by unlawful artificial intelligence (AI) content within the music sector.

Amazon and UMG to Tackle AI Issues in Music Industry

According to a press release from UMG, the expanded collaboration responds to various pressing issues in the music landscape, particularly those concerning AI-generated content that replicates the voices and styles of recognized artists. In their joint statement, both companies reaffirmed their commitment to nurturing and safeguarding authentic artistic expression.

“UMG and Amazon will also work collaboratively to address, among other things, unlawful AI-generated content, as well as protecting against fraud and misattribution,” the statement elaborated.

The rise of deepfakes and AI-generated music imitating the voices of popular artists presents a significant challenge in the industry. A notable case from last year involved an AI-created song titled Heart on My Sleeve, which featured the voices of Drake and The Weeknd. The track quickly garnered attention on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, leading many listeners to believe it was an original work. However, the song was subsequently taken down after its AI origins were disclosed.

This incident exemplifies a wider trend where individuals exploit AI technology to produce music in the style of renowned artists for financial gain. Given the ambiguous legal status surrounding AI-generated music, regulatory bodies have struggled to implement effective measures to safeguard artists against such exploitation.

In their announcement, UMG and Amazon recognized the disruptive nature of AI-generated content and expressed a commitment to collaborate in developing innovative solutions to identify and flag synthetic content appearing on Amazon’s platform.

Earlier this year, Meta also broadened its partnership to combat unauthorized AI-generated content, aiming to protect artists and songwriters. However, the specifics regarding actions to mitigate the risks associated with music deepfakes have not been disclosed by the latter partnership.
