Judge Burroughs expressed understanding of the challenges faced by both the Supreme Court and district courts, highlighting their efforts to address complex issues expediently, often under emergency circumstances. However, she cautioned against criticism directed at district courts for allegedly ‘defying’ the Supreme Court, emphasizing that these courts are striving to navigate a rapidly changing legal framework while contending with both established precedent and interim guidance from the Supreme Court that lacks clarity and consensus.
White House condemns “activist Obama-appointed judge”
In response to the ruling, White House spokesperson Liz Huston announced that the government would file an immediate appeal, describing the decision as “egregious.” Huston claimed that President Trump had accurately anticipated the outcome, asserting that the “activist Obama-appointed judge” was predisposed to favor Harvard regardless of the evidence presented.
Furthermore, Huston stated that “Harvard does not have a constitutional right to taxpayer dollars” and indicated that the institution remains ineligible for future grants. She criticized Harvard, saying, “To any fair-minded observer, it is clear that Harvard University failed to protect their students from harassment and allowed discrimination to plague their campus for years.”
In a response to the ruling, Harvard President Alan Garber articulated that the decision “affirms Harvard’s First Amendment and procedural rights,” underscoring the university’s commitment to academic freedom, vital scientific research, and the foundational principles of American higher education.
Garber reiterated that the legal battle is ongoing, affirming that “we will continue to assess the implications of the opinion, monitor further legal developments, and remain vigilant in our efforts to accomplish our mission in this evolving landscape.”
