On Wednesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the company’s vision for the future of superintelligence during his first public address since establishing the Superintelligence Labs. Zuckerberg emphasized Meta’s commitment to creating personal superintelligence that empowers individuals, contrasting it with technologies designed for widespread automation of labor. He predicted that smart glasses will eventually replace smartphones and laptops as the primary devices for computing, a shift he believes will accompany the advent of superintelligence.
Mark Zuckerberg’s Vision for Personal Superintelligence
In a detailed letter posted on the Meta website, Zuckerberg addressed both the company’s users and the broader public. He stated, “Developing superintelligence is now in sight,” and posed critical questions regarding the future trajectory of this technology. In this context, superintelligence is defined as artificial general intelligence (AGI) that exceeds human capabilities across various domains.
Zuckerberg referred to superintelligence as “a new era of personal empowerment,” expressing confidence in its potential to enhance human progress and agency in improving the world.
The CEO clarified that Meta’s focus is on developing personal superintelligence that is accessible to individuals and assists them in their daily tasks. He made a subtle critique of other tech organizations, including Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI, which are pursuing superintelligence for the collective benefit of humanity. Zuckerberg noted that Meta’s strategy does not involve automating all valuable work, suggesting it would not lead to a scenario where people depend solely on automated outputs.
He also discussed the future of devices in a world influenced by superintelligence, asserting that as personal superintelligence reduces the need for productivity software, smart glasses will emerge as the leading devices. These smart glasses, according to Zuckerberg, would possess the ability to comprehend users’ contexts by seeing, hearing, and interacting with their environments throughout the day.
Interestingly, Zuckerberg’s address to the public coincided with the release of Meta’s earnings report for the second quarter of 2025 a few hours later. The report reflected a positive financial performance, highlighting a six percent increase in daily active users, an 11 percent year-over-year rise in ad impressions, and a nine percent year-over-year increase in the average price per ad.
