Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, unveiled the company’s ambitious vision for superintelligence during a public address on Wednesday. This marked his first communication since the establishment of Superintelligence Labs, where he emphasized their intent to develop personal superintelligence that empowers individuals rather than pursuing a centralized technology aimed at automating all tasks. He predicted that, upon achieving superintelligence, smart glasses would emerge as the primary computing devices, ultimately replacing smartphones and laptops.

In a detailed blog post on the Meta website, Zuckerberg addressed both the company’s users and the wider public. He asserted, “Developing superintelligence is now in sight,” adding that a critical consideration will be the trajectory this technology assumes. Importantly, the term superintelligence in this context refers to artificial general intelligence (AGI), which exceeds human intelligence across multiple disciplines.

Describing superintelligence as “a new era of personal empowerment,” Zuckerberg conveyed optimism about the technology’s potential to speed up progress and enhance individual agency in improving societal conditions.

Zuckerberg clarified that Meta is committed solely to cultivating personal superintelligence designed to assist individuals in their everyday activities. He also critiqued competitors like Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI, noting that their focus is on broader societal benefits. He stated that Meta’s objective is not to use superintelligence to automate valuable work, suggesting that this approach could lead to humanity relying on a minimal standard of living from its outputs.

The CEO elaborated on the types of devices that will thrive alongside superintelligence. He suggested that once personal superintelligence becomes commonplace, users will have less reliance on productivity software, leading to the replacement of smartphones with smart glasses as primary devices. He noted that these smart glasses would be attuned to users’ environments, capable of seeing what they see and hearing what they hear, thus facilitating daily interactions.

Coincidentally, Zuckerberg’s public letter was released just hours before Meta published its earnings report for the second quarter of 2025. The results indicated positive growth for the technology giant, highlighted by a six percent increase in daily active users, an 11 percent year-over-year rise in ad impressions, and a nine percent year-over-year increase in the average price per advertisement.
