Zillow has introduced a new AI-driven feature intended to assist prospective homebuyers by virtually removing furniture and alter the design style of rooms. This tool aims to help buyers envision themselves in a space that may currently be impacted by the homeowner’s outdated decor or poor furniture choices.
The feature, named Virtual Staging, thoroughly addresses a common challenge faced by home seekers. Zillow’s home trends expert Amanda Pendleton noted, “Many buyers miss out on what could be their ideal home simply because they cannot overlook the existing furniture or styling.”
However, the current iteration of Virtual Staging leaves much to be desired. The modifications made are minimal—adjusting some furniture or changing rug colors—making it difficult for users to discern any significant changes without the help of AI or the feature allowing transitions between styles like modern, Scandinavian, luxury, and farmhouse.
Zillow touts this new feature as a more intelligent approach to the home buying and selling process. It complements an AI-enhanced search functionality introduced last year, designed to streamline the home-finding experience. However, access to this Virtual Staging tool is restricted to premium “Showcase” listings and is applicable only to selected featured room images, which predominantly feature plain white walls.
