YouTube is set to introduce its Veo 3 AI video generation model to YouTube Shorts this summer, as announced by CEO Neal Mohan during a keynote speech at Cannes Lions. The model has been characterized as “a slop monger’s dream” by industry observers.
Creators on Shorts currently utilize the earlier Veo 2 model, which allows for the creation of backgrounds with a feature called Dream Screen, in addition to generating standalone clips. While specific details on the capabilities of Veo 3 within Shorts were not revealed, Mohan did highlight enhancements in video quality and the model’s ability to incorporate audio, suggesting that these features will be available for Shorts users.
It remains uncertain whether Shorts creators will need to pay for access to Veo 3. Currently, generating videos with this model requires a subscription to Google’s AI Pro or AI Ultra plans. Google has not yet responded to inquiries regarding this matter.
Mohan also shared that YouTube Shorts now garners an average of over 200 billion views daily.
