YouTube is set to implement Google’s latest artificial intelligence (AI)-driven video generation model, as announced by CEO Neal Mohan during the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2025 on Wednesday. This enhancement will leverage the recently launched Veo 3 video generation AI model from Google, aimed at refining video creation for Shorts by providing advanced capabilities for AI-generated backgrounds and clips.

In a recent blog post, Mohan detailed how YouTube is already equipping creators with robust AI tools such as Dream Screen, which enhances creativity by enabling users to generate AI-based backgrounds and video clips specifically for the Shorts platform. The incorporation of Google Deepmind’s Veo 3 model is expected to further advance these creative options.
The integration aims to significantly improve the quality of videos generated through the platform, and it will also include functionality for audio integration. Although YouTube’s announcement indicates that this feature will roll out “this summer,” a specific launch date has yet to be confirmed.
Unveiled at Google I/O 2025 in May, the Veo 3 model includes capabilities for native audio generation that encompasses ambient sounds, background noises, and dialogue. Additionally, the model improves upon aspects such as prompt adherence, real-world physics, and precise lip syncing.
Mohan also emphasized the tools offered by YouTube’s AI, noting their role in eliminating barriers for content creators. The Auto Dubbing feature, which allows translation of videos into nine languages, has already been utilized to broaden the accessibility of over 20 million videos since it launched six months ago.
In a related development, Canva has introduced a new text-to-video tool powered by the Veo 3 model. This feature, named Create a Video Clip, allows users to generate video clips with cinematic quality and native audio production. Once created, these videos can be further edited with various tools available in Canva’s Video Editor.
Create a Video Clip is included in Canva’s AI suite and is exclusively available to paid subscribers. Currently, the service limits users to five video generations each month, although the company is actively exploring ways to enhance these offerings.
