YouTube is currently conducting a pilot program for a two-person subscription model for its Premium service. This initiative is being trialed in four countries, including India, with plans for a broader rollout to the entire user base in the future. The introduction of the two-person Premium plan is seen as a strategic effort to enhance YouTube’s subscription growth, complementing existing individual, family, and student plans already available.
YouTube Trials New Two-Person Premium Subscription Option
The Google-owned video streaming platform has been testing this two-person YouTube Premium membership, which was first highlighted by MoneyControl. Information about the new subscription option can now be found on the YouTube India website.
Currently, the two-person Premium subscription is accessible to a limited number of users in India due to its pilot status. In addition to India, this new plan is being assessed in France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, with expectations for wider availability in the future.
YouTube has indicated that this new offering aims to provide “flexibility and value” to its Premium subscribers. The two-person subscription is priced at Rs. 219 per month, making it a more affordable choice compared to the Family plan, which is available at Rs. 299 per month.
The individual and student YouTube Premium plans are currently priced at Rs. 149 and Rs. 89 per month, respectively. It is worth noting that YouTube raised its subscription prices in India last August.
To qualify for the two-person Premium plan, both subscribers must be at least 13 years old, possess a Google Account, and live in the same household, as stated by YouTube.
This initiative to introduce a two-person YouTube Premium plan is being perceived as a significant step toward boosting subscription revenue while reducing reliance on advertising. The arrangement allows two individuals within the same household to benefit from Premium features at a reduced cost, all while maintaining separate accounts.
YouTube Premium subscribers enjoy multiple advantages, such as an ad-free viewing experience, the ability to download videos for offline use, and background playback options. Additionally, the company recently rolled out a Premium Lite plan in selected markets, including the U.S., Australia, Germany, and Thailand. This lower-cost alternative provides limited Premium benefits compared to standard subscriptions.
