Yahoo is introducing a range of artificial intelligence features to its email platform as it seeks to engage a rapidly expanding demographic of younger users, specifically Gen Z and millennials.

On Thursday, the company announced enhancements to its Mail service designed for user convenience. A newly developed gamified feature named “Catch Up” will utilize AI to provide summaries and previews of emails, allowing users the option to either “delete” or “keep in inbox.” This marks the first significant update to the Mail app in the last ten years.

Historically, Yahoo has faced challenges in innovation, particularly as competitors like Gmail have offered more user-friendly interfaces. Compounding these issues was a major security breach in 2013, which Yahoo later estimated affected all three billion of its users, significantly undermining user trust.

Jim Lanzone, Yahoo’s Chief Executive Officer, who took the helm in 2021 to lead the company’s restructuring, stated in a recent interview that Mail continues to be a vital product for the business. He remarked, “There’s no doubt” that email retains a crucial place in both professional and personal contexts, despite predictions about its decline over the years.

According to Lanzone, nearly half of Yahoo Mail’s user base consists of Gen Z and millennials, with one-third of Americans utilizing the service. He emphasized that AI will play an integral role in Yahoo’s future, describing the technology as “incredibly important to almost every product that we operate.”

“Our intention is for AI to work seamlessly in the background, simplifying tasks across all our products, from search to mail to finance to news,” he explained. “We aim to keep user engagement straightforward, without requiring extra steps or new behaviors.”

Lanzone also referred to Yahoo as a “vintage” brand, suggesting a lasting presence ahead. “We’re just getting started because we believe there’s vast potential for innovation,” he noted. “There is so much more on our roadmap.”
