Xiaomi is preparing to introduce its first-ever in-house smartphone chipset, the XRING 01. This new processor is set to be officially announced alongside a new device later this month, as confirmed by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun. Although it is anticipated to deliver strong performance, it is expected to fall short of competing with top-tier processors like the Snapdragon 8 Elite or the MediaTek Dimensity 9400. The development of an in-house chipset could diminish Xiaomi’s dependency on external chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek, potentially benefiting its ventures in the electric vehicle sector.
Xiaomi XRING 01 Launch Timeline
In a recent Weibo post, Jun indicated that the Xiaomi XRING 01 is scheduled to be unveiled in “late May.” The announcement highlighted that the chipset has been independently designed and developed by Xiaomi, although no additional specifications were provided regarding the smartphone processor.
Additional insights from Weibo user Digital Chat Station suggest that the XRING 01 will be manufactured on a “5nm” process. This source noted that after a decade of investment in chip development, Xiaomi will join the ranks of other major smartphone manufacturers that produce their own processors, including Apple, Google, Huawei, and Samsung.
Furthermore, leaks from last month revealed further details about the XRING 01, citing a 1+3+4 CPU configuration. The design reportedly features one Cortex-X925 core (operating at 3.2GHz), three Cortex-A725 cores (at 2.6GHz), and four Cortex-A520 cores (at 2.0GHz). An IMG DXT-72 GPU from Imagination Technologies is also expected to be part of this chipset.
The leaked information mentioned that the XRING 01 would be manufactured using TSMC’s N4P process technology, a more cost-effective option compared to TSMC’s latest N3E node, which is typically utilized for flagship mobile chips.
Details regarding which devices will be the first to adopt the new Xiaomi XRING 01 chip remain undisclosed. However, further announcements are likely to emerge in the days leading up to the launch, according to the timeline provided by Xiaomi.
