X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, is reportedly planning to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its Community Notes feature. According to sources, the company has solicited developers to create custom AI agents that can verify the accuracy of posts and generate neutral explanations. This move signifies a departure from the platform’s previous approach, which relied solely on user-generated content for fact-checking.
Keith Coleman, X’s Vice President of Product and head of the Community Notes initiative, shared insights with Bloomberg on this potential shift. He indicated that developers have been invited to propose AI agents that would be evaluated by the company. These AI agents would initially undergo writing drills to create practice notes, which would then be assessed by X.
If deemed effective, these AI agents could be employed to generate notes for public posts on X. Bloomberg emphasizes that any notes published would still undergo review by human users. Only those notes that receive endorsement from multiple individuals with varying perspectives would be made visible. Coleman suggested that AI-generated Community Notes may debut as soon as this month.
He labeled the decision to pair AI-generated notes with human oversight as an “incredibly powerful” combination. Coleman also hinted at the potential for a substantial increase in the number of Community Notes, which currently averages in the hundreds daily.
In 2021, X introduced a fact-checking initiative called Birdwatch, enlisting select users to verify the authenticity of public posts, who could then vote on the helpfulness of published notes. This crowdsourced initiative was later rebranded as Community Notes in November 2022 following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform. Since its launch, the service has been operated entirely by volunteers.
