The social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, is set to introduce video and audio calling features. This initiative is part of owner Elon Musk’s ambition to develop an “everything app” to maintain a competitive edge against Threads, which is owned by Meta Platforms.

According to Musk, users will not need to provide a phone number to utilize these features, which will be accessible on Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, and personal computers. He also mentioned plans to transform X into a comprehensive global address book.

No specific timeline for the rollout has been provided.

Since rebranding Twitter to X, Musk has indicated his intention to evolve the platform into a multifunctional application that encompasses services such as messaging, social networking, and peer-to-peer payments.

This ambitious vision is reminiscent of Tencent’s WeChat app, which has become an integral part of everyday life in China.

Even after appointing a new CEO in May, Musk remains actively engaged in product development at X and is also exploring changes that could alter the presentation of news links on the platform, a move that might affect the visibility of news publishers.

Recently, X acquired a currency transmitter license, signaling potential support for processing payments in both cryptocurrency and traditional currencies. This license allows X to facilitate the custody, transfer, and exchange of digital currencies.

Musk completed the acquisition of Twitter in October of last year and expressed that “Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app.” He envisions this “everything app” as a super integrated platform similar to WeChat, which would enable users to engage in a variety of activities from booking rides and transferring money to handling everyday communications.
