X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has disclosed its year-on-year growth statistics related to video consumption, illustrating a pronounced increase in user engagement with video content. CEO Linda Yaccarino has recognized the platform’s substantial progress in this area. Owner Elon Musk has consistently highlighted his vision of transforming X into a video-centric service, unveiling a series of new video-focused features since taking over the company. Notably, last month, X introduced audio and video calling functionalities for all users.
The data was reported by X Data, the platform’s official account for sharing statistics. According to a recent tweet, the company has experienced a 35 percent increase in video views on a year-over-year basis. This significant growth indicates that the number of video views has risen by more than a third compared to the previous fiscal year. Additionally, the report reveals a 17 percent increase in the total time users spend watching videos.
The account further noted that four out of five user sessions now feature at least one video. Yaccarino shared this update, emphasizing that “X is becoming a video-first platform.” The surge in video engagement aligns with Musk’s goal of establishing a video-oriented ecosystem within the platform. Since his acquisition of X, numerous video-related features have been rolled out for users.
In May 2023, Musk announced that X Premium subscribers would have the capability to upload videos of up to two hours in length, with file sizes reaching as large as 8GB. By August, the platform introduced live video support, aligning its features with competitors such as Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. Furthermore, Musk permitted verified users to download videos, provided the content creator enabled the option. Additionally, Musk has focused on enhancing the video recommendation algorithm and implemented an infinite scrolling feature for video viewing within the mobile app.
Beyond video enhancements, the platform is also exploring other feature developments. Reports indicate that the development team is working on enabling passkey support for the Android app, following its introduction on the iOS app earlier this year. This enhancement aims to provide users with alternatives to traditional passwords, allowing for the use of biometric logins and other secure methods to protect their accounts.
