CD Projekt Red has announced that it is developing the next installment in The Witcher series. The Polish game developer confirmed in 2022 that production has begun on what is officially titled The Witcher 4. This title, codenamed Polaris, will launch a new trilogy within the beloved franchise. While specific details regarding the game remain undisclosed, reports suggest that Geralt of Rivia will appear in the new RPG, although he will not take on a leading role.

The Witcher 4

In a recent interview, Doug Cockle, the voice actor behind Geralt in the first three Witcher titles, shared that the famed monster hunter will be featured in The Witcher 4, but will not be the central character.

“The Witcher 4 has been announced. I can’t say anything about it,” Cockle stated in the interview, which was noted by VGC. “What we know is that Geralt will be part of the game; we just don’t know how much. And the game won’t focus on Geralt, so it’s not about him this time,” he explained.

Cockle refrained from providing any insight into who the protagonist of The Witcher 4 will be, expressing his enthusiasm to learn more about the new character. “We don’t know who it’s about; I’m excited to find out!” he remarked.

Having lent his voice to Geralt in The Witcher, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cockle mentioned that he has not yet had the opportunity to view the script for the latest game.

The Witcher Games in Development

The announcement for The Witcher 4 was made by CD Projekt Red in March 2022. At that time, the studio indicated that development had commenced but did not offer a specific release date. It was also confirmed that CD Projekt Red is collaborating with Epic Games to utilize Unreal Engine 5 for the production of The Witcher 4.

Later in 2022, additional information about the future of The Witcher franchise was revealed, including plans for a new trilogy, led by the project codenamed ‘Polaris.’ There is also a remake of the original game, titled The Witcher, which will be developed in Unreal Engine 5 under the code name ‘Canis Majoris,’ along with a multiplayer title dubbed ‘Sirius.’ Currently, CD Projekt Red has not provided a timeline for the release of these upcoming Witcher projects. The studio is also engaged in the development of a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.
