Sony is reportedly considering a smaller State of Play event for this summer instead of a full-length PlayStation Showcase. Discussions regarding the details of the summer event are ongoing, with no final decision made yet. Last week, the company hosted a State of Play broadcast, during which it showcased the next title from Housemarque, alongside various third-party announcements.

PlayStation Showcase in 2025

This information comes from Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb, who shared that Sony is still weighing its options for a summer presentation in 2025. The choice appears to be between staging a comprehensive PlayStation Showcase or opting for a State of Play format.

“Internally, it sounds like they are debating whether to make this summer a full showcase or another State of Play. But they are considering a showcase,” Grubb stated on his Game Mess Decides podcast on Friday.

He added, “If they do decide to hold a showcase, it indicates they’ll have a lot of material to present. At that point, we would definitely anticipate seeing updates about Wolverine and other titles expected to release next year.”

PlayStation Showcase events are characterized by their focus on major first-party announcements, while State of Play broadcasts tend to be shorter and predominantly feature third-party news. Typically, a PlayStation Showcase is conducted annually, whereas State of Play events happen three to four times a year.

Many of Sony’s first-party studios are currently developing new projects. Notable announcements include Naughty Dog’s upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, revealed at The Game Awards 2024, along with Insomniac Games working on Wolverine. Santa Monica has yet to disclose its next title, while Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei, which is a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, is scheduled for release in 2025.

Grubb also noted that there is still potential for Sony to make “fun announcements” that could help build anticipation for 2026 during this year’s gaming showcase.

It’s important to remember that the last significant PlayStation Showcase took place in 2023, where one of the major highlights was the announcement of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which is set to launch on August 28, 2025, across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. Additionally, the event featured an extensive preview of gameplay for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

In the recent State of Play broadcast, which aired last week, Sony mainly focused on third-party trailers and announcements. However, the company did unveil the next first-party project from Housemarque, which is developing Saros—a third-person roguelike bullet-hell action-adventure game expected to launch exclusively on PS5 in 2026.
