The companion mode feature of WhatsApp is reportedly now accessible to all beta testers on Android. This feature, which enables users to connect their existing WhatsApp accounts to an additional mobile phone, has been under development for a significant period. It is an enhancement of the platform’s multi-device support and has been introduced with the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.8.2. However, Meta, the parent company, has not yet specified a timeline for a broader rollout of this feature.
A report from WABetainfo, a site that tracks WhatsApp updates, confirms that the companion mode is now available to all Android beta users running version 2.23.8.2 or later. This feature allows users to manage their chat accounts across multiple smartphones.
To connect WhatsApp to a secondary device, users should follow these straightforward steps:
- Install the latest beta version of WhatsApp Messenger or WhatsApp Business on the secondary device.
- Select Link a device from the overflow menu.
- On the primary device, navigate to Settings > Linked devices.
- Point the primary device at the secondary mobile phone to scan the QR Code.
It should be noted that a linked secondary Android smartphone or tablet does not offer the same level of functionality as the primary device. However, users will still be able to access their chat and chat archives. Some features, such as managing broadcast lists and posting status updates, may be restricted to the primary device.
The report also indicates that WhatsApp is currently not developing a similar feature for iOS beta users.
In March of the previous year, WhatsApp introduced multi-device support, permitting users to access their accounts on several devices at once. The platform has also ensured end-to-end encryption for chats. Connected devices will be disconnected if the primary phone remains inactive for over two weeks. While this feature does allow PCs to serve as secondary devices, it has limitations for individuals with extra mobile phones or tablets. The new companion mode update is expected to address this limitation.
