WhatsApp is in the process of developing a new artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced feature designed to streamline the process of reviewing unread messages in its Android application. A feature tracking service has reported that the platform is testing a functionality referred to as Quick Recap, which would allow users to select a limited number of chats and receive detailed summaries of the most pertinent unread messages within each chat.
Introducing the Quick Recap Feature in WhatsApp for Android
According to a report from WABetaInfo, a dedicated WhatsApp feature tracker, this innovative feature is being prepared for inclusion in a future version of Meta Platforms’ messaging service specifically for Android users. Evidence of its development has been found in the beta version 2.25.21.12 of the WhatsApp Android app. Once available, users will have the ability to create comprehensive summaries of multiple conversations, facilitating easier navigation through unread messages.
The proposed Quick Recap feature will reportedly be accessible through a new option in the three-dot menu located in the upper-right corner of the screen, positioned between the Select all and Lock chats features. This functionality is said to allow users to choose up to five conversations to quickly summarize unread messages, providing detailed insights for each chat.
The feature tracker has indicated that Quick Recap aims to eliminate the necessity of manually sifting through lengthy threads of unread messages. Furthermore, it is believed to utilize Private Processing, a secure computing framework built upon Meta’s Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). This infrastructure is designed to prevent access to user data during processing, regardless of whether the systems are first-party or third-party.
However, it is noted that chats where Advanced Chat Privacy is enabled will not be compatible with the upcoming Quick Recap feature. According to the tracker, this functionality will not be mandatory and will be disabled by default until users choose to enable it through the application settings once it is launched.
WABetaInfo confirms that Quick Recap is still in the developmental stage and is not available to any beta testers within the Google Play Beta program at this time. Details regarding the timeline for release have yet to be disclosed.
