WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature for its web platform that will enable users to conduct web searches on shared images. Known as Search on Web, this functionality aims to facilitate reverse image searches through Google directly within the messaging application. The feature is designed to help mitigate the spread of misinformation and assist users in avoiding online scams. Testing for this feature began on WhatsApp for Android in November.
WhatsApp Web Could Get a Reverse Image Search Feature
As per WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp feature tracking source, the Search on Web functionality is under development for the web version of the popular messaging platform. However, at present, this feature is not accessible to users in the beta testing phase, and details regarding a corresponding feature for WhatsApp’s iOS app remain unclear.
A screenshot from the feature tracker indicates that the new capability will appear when a user opens an image in WhatsApp Web. When tapping the vertical menu icon adjacent to options like star, forward, and download, users will find the Search on Web option located between the Reply Privately and Report features.
While the specific operations of the reverse image search feature were not demonstrated, the tracker noted that selecting the option prompts WhatsApp to request user consent before uploading the image to Google. It is important to highlight that once users give their approval, Google will manage the rest of the process, with WhatsApp not having access to any data involved. This aspect is expected to be clearly communicated to users at the consent stage.
After approval, users can view the image on Google’s web client, similar to any standard reverse image search. This feature has the potential to become an essential tool for WhatsApp users, helping them discern the legitimacy of images received and providing context for claims that may appear exaggerated or dubious.
