WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature aimed at enhancing user privacy on WhatsApp Web. This update may eliminate the need for users to share their phone numbers when connecting with others on the messaging platform. Sources suggest that the company is working on enabling users to find one another using usernames.
According to a report from the WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the upcoming functionality would allow users to establish connections by searching for usernames. Presently, users must exchange phone numbers to connect with one another on WhatsApp. This proposed feature aims to facilitate user interactions without the necessity of disclosing personal phone numbers, particularly to individuals with whom they prefer to maintain privacy.
The implementation of username-based searches is anticipated to bolster user privacy and foster secure communications while avoiding the exchange of personal information. Screenshots revealed in the report indicate that users will eventually be able to connect by searching for names, phone numbers, or usernames.
A comparable functionality is already offered by Telegram, a competing cloud-based messaging service. Previously, WhatsApp was reported to be exploring a similar username search feature specifically for its Android application. The current report indicates that this functionality is expected to be rolled out for WhatsApp Web users in an upcoming update.
This announcement follows a recent report stating that WhatsApp is also working on a feature that will enable users to create usernames via the WhatsApp Web application. Users will reportedly have the option to change their WhatsApp usernames at any time, further enhancing their ability to control personal information.
