WhatsApp is reportedly enhancing its Chat Lock feature with a new secret code functionality for the web version of the widely used messaging app. Users already benefit from the ability to lock specific chats on WhatsApp for iOS and Android, which enhances privacy by hiding these conversations behind a code.
According to feature tracker WABetaInfo, the forthcoming secret code feature for locked chats will soon be available on WhatsApp Web. This addition aims to further bolster user privacy, although it is still in development, meaning that beta testers currently do not have access to it.
The upcoming feature is expected to function similarly to its mobile counterparts, enabling users to lock and conceal certain chats from the main list using a secret code. This code may consist of words, phrases, or even emoji and special characters. Users will need to enter this code to access their hidden chats.
This enhancement will allow WhatsApp users to protect their conversations from unauthorized access on shared devices, such as laptops or desktops. Like the Chat Lock feature introduced on mobile platforms in November, these chats will only be visible when the correct secret code is entered.
On the mobile application, once the secret code is entered, locked chats will be displayed; however, they will re-conceal when the app is closed. Users must then re-enter their secret code to view the chats again. Additionally, users have the option to disable the secret code feature and revert to the previous chat lock method, which relies on biometric authentication.
