WhatsApp introduced voice calling features to its desktop application in 2021. Now, the popular messaging service, owned by Meta, is reportedly enhancing its voice and video calling capabilities on the web. The latest update includes a ‘call back’ notification aimed at ensuring missed calls are not overlooked. Currently, this feature is being rolled out to beta users on the Microsoft Store with the recent version 2.2323.1.0. A broader rollout to additional users worldwide is expected to follow soon.
According to screenshots shared by WABetaInfo in a report, the new beta update for WhatsApp Web includes a “call back” prompt displayed alongside missed call alerts for Windows users.
Previously, missed video or voice calls on WhatsApp were only indicated by a basic missed call alert. With the introduction of the new beta feature, users can quickly return calls by clicking on the call back icon, applicable to both voice and video calls.
To access this new functionality, beta testers of WhatsApp Web must install the latest version from the Microsoft Store, version 2.2323.1.0. Notably, some users will also be able to utilize this feature with the previous version, 2.2322.1.0.
Meta plans to extend this update globally in the near future, reaching more users over the following weeks.
In addition to these updates, Meta is looking to integrate generative AI into WhatsApp, with plans to introduce ChatGPT-like chatbots that will engage with users in various personas. The company recently announced progress on testing AI-driven tools capable of generating image backgrounds and modifying ad copy for their marketing campaigns.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp is also in the process of beta testing the addition of profile icons next to messages in group chats.
