WhatsApp has initiated a rollout of a new update for beta testers, introducing a feature aimed at enhancing user protection against unsolicited messages from unknown accounts. A feature tracker identified this development, which allows users to filter out messages from unidentified senders under certain conditions. This functionality is currently accessible to select beta testers and requires manual activation. It will soon accompany two other advanced privacy features focused on safeguarding user data while using the app.

After updating to WhatsApp beta version 2.24.20.16 for Android, users will find a new option enabling them to block communications from specific unidentified accounts (via WABetaInfo). Beta testers using the latest variant on their Android devices can access this setting by navigating to the three-dot menu, then selecting Settings, followed by Privacy, Advanced, and finally Block unknown account messages. Confirmation of this new toggle has been provided by Gadgets 360, who verified its presence in the most recent beta version.

According to WhatsApp’s explanation of the new feature, it aims to protect user accounts and enhance device performance. When enabled, the platform will “block messages sent by unknown accounts if they exceed a certain volume.” This adjustment addresses the potential negative impact of spam messages on device performance, as the feature seems specifically tailored to shield users from automated spam.

Currently, this function is exclusive to beta testers, meaning those on the stable update channel will have to await a broader rollout. Once activated, users may still receive messages from unknown accounts, but within a limit that WhatsApp has not publicly specified, likely to prevent spammers from circumventing this protection.

The blocking feature will be part of a suite of advanced privacy options offered by WhatsApp, which includes safeguarding user IP addresses during calls and disabling link previews to hinder third parties from deducing a user’s IP address. All three privacy features are optional and must be manually activated by the users on their devices.
