WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature for its Android application aimed at enhancing photography in low light conditions. A report from a feature tracker indicates that a dedicated night mode is currently present in the camera interface of a beta version of the popular messaging app. This mode is designed to optimize image clarity and brightness in low-light environments without adding any overlays or stylization to the photos.
WhatsApp’s Night Mode for Android
WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp feature tracker, has reported that this night mode was found in the WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.22.2, which suggests that it could be part of a forthcoming update. The Meta Platforms-owned messaging service appears to be gearing up for its release in a future version of the app.
A screenshot shared by the feature tracker shows that a moon icon has been incorporated next to the flash icon in the upper right corner of the camera interface, allowing users to toggle the night mode by tapping on it. Notably, this feature does not activate automatically based on ambient lighting, requiring manual engagement instead.
The anticipated feature aims to leverage software enhancements to adjust image exposure and minimize noise when capturing photos in low-light settings. WABetaInfo notes that it allows the camera to capture greater detail in shadows without the need for an external light source. This advancement is expected to be particularly beneficial for indoor photography or nighttime shots when natural light is insufficient.
However, WABetaInfo cautions that users may only see a “modest” enhancement in image quality when capturing photos in very low light conditions. The night mode is not intended to create exceptionally bright and detailed images, nor is it designed to replace professional photography techniques.
The night mode feature is currently available to select beta testers enrolled in the Google Play Beta program, with plans for a broader rollout in future app updates over the coming weeks.
