WhatsApp has unveiled an array of exciting new features aimed at improving the texting and calling experience as the new year approaches, the company announced on Thursday. For a limited period, users will have the opportunity to utilize themed calling effects during video calls to celebrate the occasion. Additionally, the messaging service has launched new animations and sticker packs that align with the festive spirit. This announcement follows Instagram’s recent rollout of a time-sensitive feature known as the 2024 Collage, which is also managed by Meta Platforms.
New Year Features on WhatsApp
WhatsApp has revealed that users can now enjoy video calls this holiday season with a selection of festive backgrounds, filters, and effects to mark the new year. Among the new features are animated reactions; when users respond to messages with selected party emojis, a confetti animation will display for both the sender and receiver.
The platform has also released a new set of stickers tailored for the occasion. A specially curated New Year’s Eve (NYE) sticker pack has been made available, in addition to avatar stickers that fit the celebratory theme. WhatsApp emphasizes that these features provide an engaging way for users to send holiday greetings.
These latest additions complement other recent enhancements on WhatsApp. Last week, the company introduced a variety of new effects for video calls, including whimsical options like puppy ears, underwater scenes, and a karaoke microphone. Users can now choose from a total of 10 different effects. Additionally, group call functionalities have improved, allowing users to select specific participants without interrupting the chat for everyone else.
Other New Features
WhatsApp has previously implemented typing indicators that facilitate real-time interaction in conversations. With this feature, users see visual prompts in chats along with the profile picture of the individual who is currently typing, whether in one-on-one discussions or group chats.
Another notable update is the introduction of voice message transcripts. This feature provides users with a text transcription of the voice messages received, allowing for easier review. Importantly, only the recipient can view the voice message transcript, ensuring privacy for the sender. WhatsApp clarifies that these transcripts are generated on-device, ensuring that content remains private and secure.
