WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that aims to enhance user experience by allowing the addition, reordering, or removal of contacts. This feature, referred to as Favourites, has been identified in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android. It is anticipated that this function will create a speed dial option for users, streamlining access to their preferred contacts.
The feature was detailed by WABetaInfo, a site dedicated to tracking WhatsApp updates, which noted that the Favourites tab is set to be integrated within the app’s Settings menu. This functionality was observed in the WhatsApp beta version 2.24.7.18 update. Although it is present in the app’s code, users participating in the beta program currently do not have access to it, as it remains hidden from view. The report indicated that until the feature is fully activated, users will be unable to explore its capabilities.
According to a screenshot shared by the publication, the Favourites option appears between the Account and Privacy settings. The description states, “Add, reorder, remove,” and upon accessing this feature, a prompt reads: “Make it easy to find the people and groups that matter most across WhatsApp.” While precise details on the functionality are still limited, it seems users will be able to compile a list of favorite contacts for quick messaging access.
However, the potential utility of this feature may be questioned by users. Based on the screenshot, accessing the Favourites option requires navigating through two different screens (home screen > Settings > Favourites), which could complicate its usage. Currently, the app already prioritizes recent chats by pushing them to the top of the conversation list.
Moreover, users have the ability to pin important chats to the top of their lists for easy retrieval. This existing setup is already conducive to frequent interactions with beloved contacts. Even so, this new feature may serve as a convenient option for those looking to maintain a separate list of less-frequently contacted individuals, allowing them to stay accessible when necessary.
