In May, WhatsApp launched a Chat Lock feature, enabling users to secure individual conversations using biometric authentication or passwords. The platform, owned by Meta, is now reportedly in the process of testing an enhancement that allows users to set a custom secret code for their locked chat folders. This forthcoming feature has been identified in the beta version 2.23.21.9 for Android, which can be accessed through the Google Play Beta program.
A recent report from WhatsApp features tracker WABetaInfo indicates that users will soon have the option to create a personalized password for their secured chat folders. This addition aims to bolster the security of private conversations. Users will be able to input their secret code to access locked chats directly from the app’s search function. Furthermore, it is anticipated that this feature will enable users to lock chats from companion devices as well.
The company is distributing the update via the Google Play Beta program, specifically for the 2.23.21.9 beta for Android. Currently, this feature is unavailable to testers and is expected to roll out in a future update.
WABetaInfo has released a preview of the secret code setup, showcasing the user interface for creating the code. The preview suggests that users could opt for a simple word or an emoji for quick access and will have the ability to modify or remove the secret code at their discretion.
WhatsApp’s initial Chat Lock feature, rolled out in May for both Android and iOS users, allows individuals to maintain the privacy and security of their messages. The locking mechanism ensures that conversations are moved to a separate folder, thereby safeguarding them even if someone gains unauthorized access to a user’s device. Additionally, notifications from locked chats will not display the sender’s name or any message previews, further enhancing user confidentiality.
