WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will allow users to edit images through an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted editing tool, according to information released by a feature tracking service. This upcoming functionality may enable users to quickly alter an image’s background, redesign it, or expand its dimensions using AI technology, once it becomes available.
Feature tracker WABetaInfo, known for accurately identifying new features ahead of their official launch, reports that the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android, identified as 2.24.7.13, includes code related to an AI-powered image editor. However, this feature is still in development and is not currently accessible to users enrolled in the beta testing program.
A recent screenshot shared by WABetaInfo showcases an early iteration of this feature, visible in the image-sharing interface on WhatsApp for Android. The interface features a green icon located atop the screen, adjacent to the HD icon. Tapping this green icon reveals three options: Backdrop, Restyle, and Expand. The specific functionalities of these options remain unclear, given that the feature is still under development.
Additionally, a newer beta version, WhatsApp for Android 2.24.7.14, has unveiled a different feature uncovered by WABetaInfo. This update includes the capability to utilize the app’s search bar to query Meta AI, the company’s generative AI assistant designed to compete with offerings like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
It is important to note that both features remain in development, meaning users will not be able to test them even after updating to the latest app version. Before launching to the general public, these features are expected to undergo further refinement and be tested in the beta channel. They are also anticipated to reach iOS users, ensuring consistency across both mobile platforms.
