WhatsApp is in the process of testing a new shortcut named Imagine, which aims to allow users to create AI-generated images within the app, according to recent reports. The instant messaging platform has been exploring various artificial intelligence (AI) features, including options for AI-generated profile pictures and stickers. As part of its broader AI strategy, Meta introduced the Meta AI chat assistant to its apps, including WhatsApp, in select regions during 2023, providing users with enhanced conversational and image-generation capabilities.

A report from the WhatsApp update tracking site WABetaInfo highlights that the new image generation shortcut has been identified in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.12.4. This feature reportedly enables users to quickly generate AI-powered images utilizing Meta AI directly through the app.
While Meta AI currently supports image generation through text commands by mentioning the AI chatbot with “@Meta AI” in group chats, the anticipated Imagine shortcut could facilitate a more streamlined process for users who frequently share AI-created images.
The report mentions a screenshot displaying the new Imagine shortcut located in the attachments section, indicating that this functionality is available in a beta version of WhatsApp.
Interestingly, the feature may only be accessible to users who already have the Meta AI chatbot, which is currently limited to select countries, including the US, Australia, Canada, and South Africa. The testing of the WhatsApp chatbot is also ongoing in India. Additionally, the report conveys that the shortcut for quick image generation is still under development and has yet to be rolled out to beta testers of WhatsApp for Android, with a broader release anticipated in the future.

This functionality allows users to generate customized AI profile pictures by submitting a descriptive prompt on a dedicated page titled Create AI Profile Picture. According to the report, this feature has been observed in WhatsApp for Android app version 2.24.11.17.
