WhatsApp for Android is reportedly in the process of developing two innovative artificial intelligence (AI) features designed to enhance user interaction within the app. A recent report indicates that the popular messaging platform is working on an AI-driven Rewrite feature that would allow users to transform their typed messages into various styles, as well as proofreading capabilities before sending.
New AI Features on the Horizon for WhatsApp Android Users
An article from Android Authority highlights a potential text-rewriting feature powered by AI, discovered during an APK teardown of WhatsApp for Android version 2.25.8.5. Since the feature is not yet live, users will not have the opportunity to test it at this time.
The anticipated AI Rewrite feature is expected to be accessible via a floating action button (FAB) represented by a pencil icon, positioned just above the Send button. This icon will appear after the user has entered text in private chats or group conversations. Users will then be able to select the pencil icon to access a text editor with multiple rewriting options.
According to the report, options available through the Rewrite feature include Funny, Proofread, Puns, Rephrase, Sarcastic, Shorter, Spooky, and Supportive. The Proofread function aims to correct spelling and grammatical mistakes, while the other options provide alterations in the tone of the messages.
In addition, the feature tracker WABetaInfo has indicated that WhatsApp is also making strides towards enhancing the Meta AI experience. Currently, users can engage with the AI chatbot through text-based interactions, pose questions, access web information, generate images, and send prompts via voice messages. However, two-way voice communication with the AI is not presently available.
This may change with forthcoming updates. WABetaInfo discovered a call-like interface for Meta AI within the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android, version 2.25.8.7. Nonetheless, as this feature remains under development, beta testers will not have access to it yet.
According to screenshots provided by the feature tracker, the new Meta AI interface will initiate a call-like session once made available. Users will have the flexibility to choose between a text-only mode or allow the AI to respond verbally, while they continue to input text messages. The proposed two-way live voice chat appears to resemble the capabilities of Gemini Live.
WABetaInfo reports that users will be able to maintain conversations even when the app is running in the background or when switching to other applications. A mute option has also been noted, providing users the ability to silence audio in noisy settings. Additionally, users will have the freedom to cease the call at any time.
Importantly, back in September 2024, the company introduced the Meta AI Voice Chat feature featuring celebrity voices. However, this was a text-to-speech (TTS) upgrade rather than a function similar to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode. Details remain unclear regarding whether the new feature is simply a redesign of the previous one or if it will deliver a more lifelike voice chatting experience.
