WhatsApp is reportedly developing a Companion Mode for Android tablets that enables users to link their WhatsApp account to both an Android tablet and a secondary phone at the same time. According to recent updates, the Meta-owned messaging service is currently testing a new split view feature for select beta users accessing the app on Android tablets. This split screen mode allows for simultaneous viewing of the chat list and chat window, and will also be accessible within the calls and status sections.
A report from WABetaInfo, a platform that tracks WhatsApp features, highlights the addition of this split view to the tablet interface. The beta version of WhatsApp for Android 2.23.5.9 includes references to the updated layout.
The report features a screenshot demonstrating how the new split view may appear upon its eventual release. From the image, it is evident that the chat list will remain visible while a conversation is open, enabling users to switch between chats efficiently and juggle multiple tasks. The calls and status tabs are also expected to incorporate the split view functionality.
Currently, this enhanced interface is available exclusively to users enrolled in the WhatsApp Android beta program, with a potential public launch anticipated in the future. The company may refine or adjust the feature before making it available to all users.
Earlier reports indicated that users of WhatsApp beta for Android 2.22.21.6 would have the capability to link an existing WhatsApp account to an Android tablet. This capability was first noted in September of the previous year and has since been under development, with no official rollout yet. Users will eventually be able to access the same account from multiple devices, up to four, including a tablet, aligning with the upcoming feature.
