WhatsApp is in the process of developing a feature designed to curb unwanted spam and nuisance calls on its popular messaging platform. The service, which relies on phone numbers for connectivity, allows users to call any registered user, regardless of whether their contact information is saved. The anticipated update aims to shield users from disturbances caused by unsolicited callers.
According to insights from WABetaInfo, a site dedicated to tracking WhatsApp’s feature developments, the latest beta version for Android includes code that facilitates the silencing of calls from unknown numbers. Unlike other features currently available for beta testers, this particular update is still under development.
A screenshot shared by the feature tracker illustrates a toggle labeled Silence unknown callers within the settings menu. Once activated, this feature will mute incoming calls from numbers that are not saved in the user’s contacts.
Although the feature will silence these calls, users will still see missed calls from unknown numbers in their call logs and notifications, ensuring they remain aware of any attempted contact from unknown users.
This forthcoming capability could prove invaluable in tackling the influx of scam and spam calls on the platform. Users will retain the option to return calls to unknown numbers if a message is left. The tracker also notes that this setting could be particularly useful for users in Communities, where the phone numbers of group administrators are visible.
There has been no official announcement from WhatsApp regarding the release timeline for this new feature. While it has been noted in the current Android beta, the feature is expected to expand to iOS and desktop applications as well. Given that it is still undergoing development, further updates or modifications could occur prior to its public rollout.
