WhatsApp is in the process of introducing a new feature aimed at enhancing the experience for Android users during video calls, according to a recent report. The messaging application is reportedly testing an option that allows users to disable their device’s camera before answering a video call. This potential addition was uncovered during an APK analysis of a beta version of WhatsApp.
Disabling Camera Prior to Video Calls
The feature was identified by Android Authority following an APK teardown of WhatsApp beta version 2.25.7.3 for Android. Although the functionality is not currently available to the public, the publication was able to enable it through modifications to the app. Users receiving a video call would see an option marked Turn off your video, allowing them to disable video before accepting the call. Consequently, the call would be answered in voice-only mode.
If the camera is already turned off, an alternative Accept without video prompt would appear for confirmation. Furthermore, the report indicates that users could later turn on the camera during the call by selecting the Turn on your video option.
Currently, WhatsApp lacks similar functionality. Users can only deactivate their video feed once they have accepted a video call. The anticipated feature is expected to offer a capability similar to platforms like Google Meet and Microsoft Teams.
Additional WhatsApp Features Under Development
Earlier reports have indicated that WhatsApp is working on a variety of new features for its Android app. Among the proposed enhancements is a UPI Lite function aimed at streamlining payment processes, allowing users to conduct transactions without the need for a PIN.
In addition, WhatsApp is expected to soon introduce a revamped interface for Meta AI, its conversational artificial intelligence chatbot. This new feature is anticipated to include an automatic voice mode along with suggestions to assist users in getting started.
