WhatsApp for Android is in the process of developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature that will allow users to create customized AI characters within the application, according to insights from a prominent feature tracker. This functionality is said to resemble the AI character creation tools currently available on Instagram and Messenger. Users will be able to outline their chatbot’s personality traits and area of focus through a text prompt, with the AI capable of generating a profile picture and a biography. Furthermore, the app is reportedly working on a dedicated tab to showcase these AI characters.
WhatsApp for Android Could Introduce AI Characters
The feature tracker, WABetaInfo, noted that the AI character creation capability was identified in the WhatsApp beta version for Android, specifically in update 2.25.1.26. However, since this feature is still being developed, it is not yet available for beta testers. Additionally, another version, 2.25.1.24, revealed the existence of a separate tab for AI characters, which is not currently functional either.

Through screenshots released by the feature tracker, it appears that the AI character creation function closely mirrors similar offerings within other apps owned by Meta. This feature is likely powered by AI Studio, enabling users to develop new AI characters from the ground up or modify existing templates. From the visuals shared, users may have the capability to describe their personalized chatbot’s qualities through up to 1,000 characters.
To facilitate this process, WhatsApp has incorporated description suggestions at the bottom of the screen, providing users with inspiration or a foundational idea for their descriptions. While the screenshot primarily displayed the first of three steps, if the method aligns with the AI Studio on Instagram or Messenger, the subsequent stages would probably include the generation of an image and biography, as well as privacy settings for the AI chatbot.
Another screenshot reveals that WhatsApp is considering a dedicated section for these AI characters, creating a new tab where users can view all the chatbots they have crafted alongside all available public AI characters. It remains uncertain whether the AI bots developed on WhatsApp will also be accessible in other Meta applications.
