WhatsApp for Android is reportedly developing an artificial intelligence (AI) feature that will enable users to create customized AI characters within the application, according to insights from a feature tracker. This upcoming functionality is expected to bear similarities to the AI character creation tools already offered on Instagram and Messenger.
WhatsApp for Android Could Introduce AI Characters
The feature tracker, WABetaInfo, indicated that the AI character creation capability was identified in the WhatsApp beta release for Android version 2.25.1.26. Currently, this feature is in development and is not accessible to beta testers. Additionally, WABetaInfo has pointed out a new dedicated tab for AI characters in the beta version 2.25.1.24, which remains non-functional at this time.
According to screenshots shared by the feature tracker, the AI character creation functionality seems to replicate features available in other Meta-owned applications. It is likely that AI Studio will be utilized, allowing users to craft AI characters from scratch or via pre-existing templates. The screenshots suggest users will be able to input descriptions of up to 1,000 characters detailing their personalized chatbot’s characteristics and areas of focus.
At the bottom of the interface, WhatsApp appears to be including suggested descriptions to assist users in generating ideas or finding a starting point for their chatbot’s traits. Though only the first step of a three-step process was visible in the shared screenshot, further steps are expected to involve generating an image and bio, alongside selecting privacy settings for the AI chatbot.
Another screenshot suggests that WhatsApp may introduce a dedicated area for managing these AI characters through a new tab. This space would display all chatbots created by the user, as well as publicly available AI characters. Importantly, it remains uncertain whether AI bots constructed within WhatsApp will also be viewable in other Meta applications.
