WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that will introduce an in-app dialler, allowing users to make voice calls directly from the platform. Though still in the development phase, this functionality has not yet been rolled out to participants in the Google Play beta program. The precise capabilities of the dialler remain uncertain; however, it is speculated that it may enable users to call numbers not saved in their contact lists. Additionally, recent reports indicate that the company is also exploring a nearby file-sharing feature.
According to the feature tracker WABetaInfo, the dialler feature was discovered in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.9.28, but it is not currently accessible to beta testers. The tracker anticipates that it could be included in upcoming updates, potentially transforming WhatsApp into more than just a traditional voice and video calling platform. The new capability may allow users to make calls to unsaved contacts, further mimicking a standard calling service.
The tracker has also shared a screenshot of the feature, which is not yet activated in the latest beta version. The interface resembles a typical dialler, complete with a green calling icon and the standard layout for numbers and letters.
While the reasons for introducing the dialler remain unclear, speculation suggests it may help users quickly call numbers they can remember instead of having to sift through their contact lists.
