WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature aimed at enhancing user flexibility within the messaging platform. A recent analysis of the beta version of WhatsApp for Android has unveiled that the app may soon include a logout option, enabling users to sign out of their accounts even on their primary devices. This functionality will presumably allow users to pause their WhatsApp usage or switch accounts without the need to delete app data from their smartphones.
New Logout Feature to Offer Data Retention Options in WhatsApp
The potential Logout feature was identified by Android Authority and AssembleDebug during a teardown of WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.17.37. Currently, it appears to be in development or undergoing internal testing. Users can find it in the app’s settings under Settings > Account, as noted by the source.
The proposed logout functionality offers users three options: Erase all Data & preferences, Keep all Data & preferences, and Cancel. Opting for the first choice would remove all chats from the user’s device, whereas the latter option would allow users to retain their data should they choose to log back in later.
If users select Keep all Data & preferences, they will be logged out of their WhatsApp account, yet their chats, files, and other media will remain on their device. This setup enables users to swiftly access their content upon logging back in.
This new feature could be particularly beneficial for users looking to take a break from WhatsApp without completely deleting their accounts. Many messaging applications do not support a logout option, consequently forcing users to uninstall the app if they need a hiatus.
Currently, there is no timeline for when the logout option will become available to the broader WhatsApp user base. Initially, it is expected to be accessible to beta testers before rolling out to all users through the stable release channel.
