WhatsApp is reportedly in the process of testing a new feature for its Android users that will enable them to send motion photos. According to a feature tracker, this capability was recently discovered in the latest beta version of WhatsApp and may be accessible to select beta testers. The motion photos will capture the audio and movement both before and after a photo is taken, enhancing the multimedia messaging experience. Additionally, the messaging platform is said to be developing a feature that will allow users to share usernames instead of relying on phone numbers.
WhatsApp Could Soon Introduce Motion Photos
As noted by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the platform is currently testing motion photo support. This feature was first identified in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.22.29, which is now accessible on Google Play. Beta testers can look forward to experimenting with this new functionality, although it may take a few days before it becomes available for all beta users.
Screenshots provided by the feature tracker show that motion photos will be indicated by a new icon featuring a play button encircled by a ring and a small circle. This icon will appear on the image selection screen, where users choose images from their gallery to send to individual contacts or groups.
The new icon, located in the upper right corner, allows users to send an image as a motion photo with a simple tap. WhatsApp defines motion photos as “a recording of the moments before & after a photo was taken,” and these recordings will also include accompanying audio.
It’s important to note that motion photo capabilities exist on numerous Android devices. For instance, Samsung refers to this feature as Motion Photos, while Google incorporates it into its Pixel smartphones as Top Shot. Users will be able to send motion recordings only if their devices support this functionality. However, even those whose devices lack the ability to capture motion photos will still be able to view them when received from others.
Once made available to all users, this feature will resolve the issue where motion photos were previously converted into video files upon sending. Currently, WhatsApp has not provided any information regarding when this feature might transition out of beta testing.
