A recent report indicates that WhatsApp may be in the process of developing a UPI Lite feature, which aims to streamline the payment experience for users. This capability would allow individuals to make transactions without the need to input a PIN, particularly benefiting those making low-value payments. The insights into this feature emerged after an APK teardown of a beta version of the application revealed references to its functionality. This development follows reports of WhatsApp also working on a bill payment feature for its users in India.

UPI Lite on WhatsApp

The potential UPI Lite feature was uncovered by Android Authority during an analysis of the WhatsApp beta app version 2.25.5.17. The code within this update contains multiple strings related to the anticipated UPI Lite functionality. This would enable users to make swift transactions even during times of server congestion, allowing payments to be processed with just a single click and minimizing the risk of transaction failures.

Additionally, the code suggests that users may be able to add and withdraw funds directly through the messaging platform. However, the UPI Lite setup will be device-specific, meaning it will only be accessible on the device where it was configured and not across all devices linked to the user’s account. This new feature would expand WhatsApp’s existing UPI capabilities, which currently permit users to link their UPI accounts for payments within the app.

Historically, WhatsApp has been exploring expanded financial functionalities tailored to its Indian audience. The company is reportedly developing a bill payment feature that would allow users to settle various bills—including those for electricity, mobile services, water supply, rent, piped gas, and postpaid landline services—directly within the application.

It is important to note that UPI Lite is an application designed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), operating on existing UPI ecosystem protocols. This feature is specifically intended for processing low-value transactions, capped at under Rs. 500, and it can be utilized even in the absence of a live internet connection, provided it is linked to the user’s mobile number.
