WhatsApp is reportedly piloting a new feature for Android users that enables them to engage in real-time voice conversations with Meta AI. According to a feature tracker, this innovative AI capability is currently being introduced to a select group of beta testers, allowing users to either initiate a voice chat directly or switch to it while interacting with the chatbot interface. The feature also includes a continuity option, enabling users to converse with the AI while other applications run in the background.
As reported by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the instant messaging service has begun testing the voice chat mode with Meta AI among specific beta testers. This feature was identified in the latest WhatsApp beta version 2.25.21.21 for Android. It was first noted in a report back in March, indicating that the Meta-owned firm was in the development phase of this capability.
Screenshots shared by the feature tracker indicate that the voice mode feature offers significant flexibility and personalization options. Users can start two-way voice interactions with Meta AI by entering the chat interface and tapping the waveform icon. Alternatively, users may adjust their settings to automatically enter voice mode upon opening the chat interface. This feature is turned off by default and applies exclusively to the chat tab.
When a user is in the Call tab, the Meta AI icon automatically transitions to the waveform icon, enabling users to begin a voice conversation with the chatbot seamlessly. This adjustment appears designed to enhance the integration with the Call tab’s established functionality.
While in voice chat mode, users will see suggested conversation topics at the center of the chat interface, intended to assist users in starting their discussions. Additionally, a collapse icon located in the top left corner allows voice chats to be minimized, similar to collapsing ongoing WhatsApp calls, permitting users to switch to other applications while maintaining their conversation.
WhatsApp is reportedly providing multiple methods for users to conclude voice conversations. This can be done by pressing the X button at the bottom of the interface or simply navigating away from the chat screen. Users can also opt to type a message in the text field, which will shift the interaction back to text mode. If users are uncertain whether the call is still active, they can check the call’s notification alert and the microphone indicator on their Android device.
