WhatsApp has introduced a new feature allowing users to send short video messages. Previously, users could communicate via audio clips or text, but the latest update enables them to record and send short videos as a replacement for text messages. These video messages can be up to 60 seconds long, and the company emphasizes that they are end-to-end encrypted. The rollout of this feature has begun and is expected to be available to all users worldwide soon.

In a Facebook post, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the new functionality. He provided a brief video demonstration showing how the feature operates within WhatsApp. As depicted, users can access the feature in a manner similar to how they record real-time voice messages now. An icon for video recording will appear next to the text box, facilitating the creation of video messages of up to 60 seconds.

WhatsApp further elaborated on the feature in an official blog post. These video messages can convey personal messages for occasions like birthdays or share news with a more intimate touch. Users can activate the feature by clicking the icon adjacent to the text box. When a message is opened, the videos will play without sound by default. Users can enable the audio by tapping the video again.

The blog indicated that this feature is rolling out gradually and will be accessible to users globally in the coming days on both Android and iOS platforms. Users looking to access the feature sooner can download the latest version of WhatsApp from the Google Play Store or the App Store.

It is worth noting that WhatsApp already allows the sharing of images and videos. However, this new feature streamlines the process of sending video messages, enhancing the overall user experience. The company reiterates that these messages are encrypted for secure conversations.

The introduction of this feature was first highlighted last month, when WhatsApp was seen testing the capacity for video messaging on its Android and iOS applications.
