The Google Pixel 8 series, which launched last year, has introduced an enhanced facial recognition feature that enables users to access various banking and payment applications with ease. In a recent development, WhatsApp has integrated support for this face unlock functionality on Pixel 8 devices, allowing users to securely unlock the app and safeguard their conversations from unauthorized access.
With this new update, WhatsApp users on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro can now unlock the app simply by looking into the front camera after setting up facial recognition. This addition streamlines the authentication process by removing the necessity for traditional biometric methods.
The update, which appears in WhatsApp’s stable version 2.24.8.85, introduces an enhanced security measure for Pixel 8 series users. Upon launching the app, a system face unlock prompt is displayed at the bottom of the screen, accompanied by a visual ring around the front camera. If the app fails to recognize the user’s face after a few moments, it will revert to the fingerprint sensor for authentication, and users have the option to enter their PIN as an alternative.
Visual enhancements have also been made to the ‘WhatsApp Locked’ screen. During testing on a Pixel 8, the screen now features the word ‘locked’ instead of the previous tick mark, signifying that the app is secured.
Google has long incorporated a face unlock feature in its flagship smartphones. However, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, launched in October last year, marked a significant advancement in this technology, enabling access to compatible banking and payment applications, such as Google Wallet.
This capability is powered by the Google Tensor G3 SoC, sophisticated machine learning algorithms, and the Titan M2 security chip, allowing users to authorize contactless transactions via Google Pay efficiently.
