WhatsApp has introduced passkey support for Android users, enabling them to securely log back into their accounts using biometric authentication or their device PIN. This new feature replaces the previous requirement of using a one-time password (OTP) along with an optional six-digit PIN for two-factor authentication. With the implementation of passkeys, Android users can now utilize their device’s built-in face or fingerprint recognition to streamline the login process with a passkey stored on their device.
The announcement came shortly after Google indicated its plans to phase out password usage across its services, enhancing support for passkeys on both Android and the web. WhatsApp made its passkey support known through an update on X, formerly Twitter. Importantly, the existing fingerprint lock feature remains available, allowing users the option to log in via their phone number and an OTP if they prefer.
Understanding Passkeys
A passkey serves as a secure substitute for traditional passwords, simplifying the login process for apps and services. Instead of entering a password and a secure OTP, users can authenticate their identity with their fingerprint or device PIN, confirming that they are the legitimate account holders.
Passkeys utilize Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) technology, preserving security by storing a “secret” on devices like smartphones for logging into websites instead of relying on passwords. The mechanism employs a combination of public key cryptography and biometric authentication to deliver enhanced security.
Through public key cryptography, the passkey remains exclusively on the user’s device, reducing the risk of exposure even in the event of a breach at WhatsApp’s servers, as there are no passwords to be compromised. In light of these security advantages, numerous companies, including Adobe, Amazon, GitHub, Google, PayPal, and Uber, are either exploring or have already implemented passkey login systems.
“Passkey verification will make logging back into WhatsApp easier and more secure. We’re excited to launch this on WhatsApp and provide users with an additional layer of security,” stated Alice Newton-Rex, Head of Product at WhatsApp.
Setting Up a Passkey on WhatsApp for Android
To enable passkeys on WhatsApp for Android, users need to open the app, head to the settings menu, and select Account > Passkeys > Create a passkey. After reviewing the information popup regarding how passkeys function, users should tap Continue. A follow-up message from Google Password Manager will prompt users to create a passkey for WhatsApp—tapping Continue and Use screen lock will finalize the setup, allowing users to see the newly generated passkey.
Gadgets 360 confirmed that passkey support is currently available in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.21.12. Users on the stable version may need to wait a bit longer before accessing this feature on their devices.
