The beta version of WhatsApp has introduced a notable update, enhancing the user experience for group interactions. This update features what was previously known as audio chats, enabling users to initiate voice calls within group settings. Additionally, the latest beta update permits sending messages to group administrators for review, which is designed to aid in better managing group communications. These updates are slated to become available on the stable version of the app in the near future.
As part of the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.16.19, select beta testers will be able to access the newly introduced voice chat functionality, as identified by feature tracker WABetaInfo. This upgrade alters the existing process for group audio calls, replacing the typical call icon with a waveform representation. By selecting this icon, users can start a voice chat where other group participants can join in as well. Notably, unlike traditional group voice calls, these voice chats will not trigger phone calls; instead, all members will receive a push notification alert.
WABetaInfo has released several screenshots displaying the functionality of the voice chat feature. Once initiated, it allows group members to converse similarly to traditional audio calls. Any idle voice chats will automatically conclude after an hour. Furthermore, it appears that the current limitations on voice calls, allowing for a maximum participation of 32 members, will also extend to these new voice chats.
In a separate update, WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.16.18, released over the weekend, reportedly adds a feature aimed at enhancing group moderation. This version introduces a toggle option in the group settings labeled Send for admin review, enabling group members to send messages directly to the group’s administrator for evaluation.
Currently, users have the option to report messages from others, but WhatsApp has recently empowered group admins with the capability to delete messages for improved moderation. With the new feature activated, users can report particular messages within the group to the admins, allowing for timely removal of inappropriate content, according to WABetaInfo. This is expected to help admins manage messages that may be overlooked during their absence from the app.
There has been no official announcement from WhatsApp regarding the timeframe for rolling out these features to all users. Gadgets 360 was unable to verify the availability of these updates after updating to the latest app version, indicating that they could be activated through a server-side update. Users who install the updated beta version may gain access to these features in the upcoming days.
