WhatsApp is currently exploring a new feature for its iOS platform that incorporates augmented reality (AR) technology. A feature tracker has reported that this functionality could enhance video calls by allowing users to modify elements such as lighting and backgrounds. This feature has been rolled out in a beta update, which also includes the option to apply real-time touch-up filters and a specialized low-light mode.
WhatsApp Update
According to WABetaInfo, a source closely following feature updates, support for AR was first identified in WhatsApp’s beta version for Android back in July. The feature has now made its way to iOS, with ongoing tests linked to the recent WhatsApp beta for iOS version 24.15.10.70 facilitated through the TestFlight program.
According to shared screenshots, the new AR features reportedly include a set of dynamic facial filters. Users are expected to have the capability to adjust their appearance, such as modifying the overall color tone of the video feed. Furthermore, there is a background editing tool that allows individuals to blur their surroundings or choose from preset backgrounds offered by WhatsApp.
The beta update also seems to introduce two distinct modes: touch-up and low-light. The touch-up mode appears to include a facial filter designed to eliminate blemishes and refine skin texture, similar to beauty filters found on smartphones. Meanwhile, the low-light mode allegedly improves visibility for users in darker environments.
This functionality is still in developmental stages, and currently, only beta testers registered through the Apple TestFlight program can access it. Broader access to these features is anticipated to be available in the coming weeks.
Other New Features
Beyond its AR advancements, WhatsApp has recently enriched its sticker offerings with the addition of GIPHY-powered stickers. Users can now conveniently search for relevant stickers within the app without needing to exit. Furthermore, the custom sticker maker, which was rolled out on iOS in January, is now also available to Android users.
If users are unable to find a suitable sticker from the existing library, they have the option to create their own using Meta AI, the conversational artificial intelligence assistant integrated into various Meta Platforms’ apps, including WhatsApp and Instagram.
