WhatsApp has unveiled a new beta update that allows users to send images in HD quality. The Meta-owned messaging platform is currently testing this feature across its latest beta versions for both iOS and Android. Traditionally, WhatsApp compresses images by default, which often results in diminished quality for recipients. The introduction of this feature aims to provide users with the option to send higher-quality photos, thereby enhancing the visual experience.
Social media consultant Matt Navarra was the first to identify the feature, sharing a screenshot that highlighted the newly implemented HD button. This button enables users to send high-definition images, which offer greater clarity but require more data and storage compared to standard images.
In addition, WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo has provided further insights about the update. The feature is presently available in iOS beta version 23.11.0.76 and Android beta version 2.23.12.13.
According to WABetaInfo, while users can select the HD option for images, WhatsApp will still apply some light compression. The standard setting remains on Standard quality, which means users will have to actively switch to the HD option each time they wish to send a high-resolution image. Once an HD image is sent, a small HD icon will appear on the image thumbnail within the chat.
Currently, this functionality is limited to sharing HD images in one-on-one conversations. WABetaInfo notes that users are not able to upload HD quality images as their WhatsApp Status, nor is there support for sending HD videos through the app. The only method for sharing videos without compression involves sending them as documents, a workaround that applies to images as well.
The rollout of the HD photo feature is currently ongoing for select beta testers on the latest versions of iOS and Android. WhatsApp plans to expand availability of this feature to a broader audience in the near future.
