Vodafone Idea has initiated discussions with several satellite communication providers, including Starlink, the company announced on Wednesday. This comes shortly after its competitors finalized agreements with Elon Musk’s venture.
The announcement was made following inquiries from Indian stock exchanges about the company’s recent stock performance and a corresponding report from the financial news outlet Moneycontrol earlier that day.
On Wednesday, shares of Vodafone Idea experienced an uptick of nearly five percent.
“Our approach focuses on delivering services—be it fixed or mobile—in areas that are not well-served, where satellite technology is particularly effective,” said Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer of Vodafone Idea, as reported by Moneycontrol.
“Furthermore, we aim to provide fixed wireless broadband in rural areas and smaller towns, where establishing infrastructure for such services is costly.”
Recently, Musk’s SpaceX has entered into agreements with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to introduce Starlink’s internet solutions in India.
Under these agreements, the Indian telecom operators will begin stocking Starlink equipment in their retail stores, providing a widespread distribution network for the US-based satellite firm across thousands of locations in the country.
The implementation of these agreements will hinge on Starlink receiving the necessary government approvals to commence operations in India.
