On Wednesday, Vodafone Idea (Vi) revealed a new strategic alliance with US-based satellite technology firm AST SpaceMobile to launch direct-to-device satellite broadband services in India. This initiative aims to enhance cellular broadband access in areas with difficult terrains where traditional infrastructure is hard to implement.

According to a press release from Vi, the partnership will utilize AST SpaceMobile’s advanced space-based cellular broadband system, allowing for voice and video calls, data streaming, and internet connectivity in remote and previously unconnected regions throughout India.
The new service will enable users to access 4G and 5G networks directly via a constellation of satellites, without needing any specialized software, firmware updates, or device modifications. Importantly, this offering is designed not to replace existing cellular services but to complement and enhance the current terrestrial networks.
Vi highlighted that its new satellite-based broadband service is in line with the Digital India initiative, aiming to increase digital accessibility across the country. Under this agreement, AST SpaceMobile will be responsible for developing, manufacturing, and managing the satellite constellation, while Vi will oversee network integration, spectrum operations, and market access.
Avneesh Khosla, Chief Marketing Officer at Vi, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “As satellite-based mobile access becomes a reality in India, we are looking forward to ushering in a new era of seamless and resilient connectivity.”
The SpaceMobile Satellite System is designed for both commercial and governmental use, utilizing a low-Earth orbit satellite constellation to deliver connectivity. Users can access this network in remote areas without any requirement to switch cellular service providers. The system collaborates with telecom operators to offer an alternative connectivity solution in regions where traditional cellular coverage falls short.
In addition to the satellite broadband services, Vi and AST SpaceMobile plan to work together on various commercial projects spanning consumer, enterprise, IoT (Internet of Things), and other sectors.
