On Tuesday, Meta introduced a dedicated application for its artificial intelligence chatbot, named Meta AI. The app is now accessible for download on both Android and iOS platforms, via the Play Store and App Store, respectively. Users can enjoy a social aspect within the app, featuring a Discover feed that displays posts and images shared by other users. Furthermore, Meta is rolling out a voice mode, enabling users to engage in two-way verbal interactions with the AI. This voice functionality is currently available in select countries.
In a newsroom announcement, Meta elaborated on the app’s various features. CEO Mark Zuckerberg had previously indicated that a standalone AI application was in development. The Meta AI app operates on the Llama 4 AI model, positioning itself in competition with other popular chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude.
The Meta AI app emphasizes a social experience, equipped with a Discover feed that allows users to share their interactions with the chatbot. Users can post prompts, Meta AI’s responses, and AI-generated images. The platform also facilitates user engagement, where individuals can like, comment on, or remix posts from others. Meta assures users that no content is shared to the feed unless they actively choose to do so.

To utilize the app, users must log in with a Meta account, which can be linked to either Instagram or Facebook. This setup grants the app access to the user’s profile, engagement history, and interactions with Meta AI, allowing for a tailored user experience. Currently, this personalized feature is available for users in the United States and Canada.
In addition to drawing on social media data, Meta AI is equipped with a memory function. The chatbot can retain contextual details from prior conversations, enhancing its ability to customize responses.
The app also supports a hands-free interaction experience. Users can converse with the AI in a natural tone, with adjustments made to the Llama 4 model to facilitate this interaction. Through voice commands, users may also request image generation or modifications.

Meta is also piloting full-duplex speech technology, which allows the AI to generate voice responses directly, rather than relying on text-to-speech conversion. This advancement aims to provide a more human-like conversational experience, though currently, this mode does not have access to the internet or real-time information. Voice features are available exclusively in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States for now.
Moreover, the new Meta AI app integrates with the Meta View companion app linked to Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Users will need to pair their smart glasses with the app to utilize specific functionalities, such as managing their gallery, editing images, or reviewing conversation history.

In select regions, users will also have the ability to transition seamlessly from the AI app to the glasses without interrupting the conversation flow. However, conversations can currently only begin on the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, although they can be continued through the Meta AI app or the website. Importantly, the Meta AI app is free to download and use, with no subscription fees required at this time.
