OpenAI has introduced a new feature for ChatGPT that aims to enhance collaboration between users and artificial intelligence (AI) on various projects. Following its annual DevDay conference in San Francisco, the company unveiled the Canvas interface, which allows users to edit AI-generated content more interactively. This feature enables users to modify portions of text or request changes through a set of editing tools, catering to both coding and creative writing tasks.

Details about the new Canvas feature were provided in a blog post from OpenAI. Canvas is a secondary window that integrates into the ChatGPT platform, developed using the advanced GPT-4o model, which users will need access to in order to utilize this feature. Currently in early beta, the Canvas interface is being rolled out to ChatGPT Plus and Team users worldwide, with plans to extend availability to Enterprise and Edu users next week. OpenAI has indicated that once the feature exits beta, it will be available to all users.

The Canvas feature introduces an innovative way for users to collaborate with AI on intricate projects that require fine-tuning. Traditionally, ChatGPT functions by having users input prompts that generate outputs, and in cases of unsatisfactory results, users can refine their prompts through a trial-and-error approach. However, this process often neglects the need for minor adjustments in the output.

With the activation of Canvas, users gain access to new inline editing tools specifically designed for various writing tasks. Among the five available tools are “Suggest edits,” which allows modifications to selected parts of the text, and “Adjust the length,” enabling users to either condense or expand the content. The “Change reading level” feature permits adjustments in the text complexity, with options ranging from Kindergarten to Graduate School.

Additionally, the “Add final polish” tool checks the text for grammar, clarity, and consistency, while “Add emojis” integrates relevant emojis to enhance the writing.

For coding applications, the Canvas interface provides five distinct tools as well. The “Review code” feature enables ChatGPT to suggest inline improvements, while “Add logs” facilitates the insertion of print statements for debugging purposes. The “Add comments” tool generates explanations for selected code snippets.

The “Fix bugs” tool identifies and corrects code errors, and “Port to a language” allows users to translate code into various programming languages, including JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, and PHP.

Users can also make direct inline edits to the text and code generated by the AI. According to OpenAI, the Canvas interface is designed to enable users to provide precise feedback to the AI, akin to a copy editor or code reviewer, enhancing the overall collaborative experience.
